Local Nurse Leaders and Agency Staff Inspired by DAISY Foundation Visit to Cincinnati
Cincinnati, OH (Feb 1, 2024) - Leading healthcare staffing agency Health Carousel was honored to host Mark and Bonnie Barnes, co-founders of the globally recognized DAISY Foundation. The DAISY Foundation celebrates nurses around the world and was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem. Today, the Foundation expresses gratitude to the nursing profession internationally in more than 6,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in 41 countries.
Jill Crase, a credentialing specialist with Health Carousel working towards her nursing degree, commented on the keynote: "I've been in nursing school for a little over a year now while working, and admittedly, it's very hard. I was starting to feel worn down. Hearing them (the Barneses) speak and their stories about nurses and why they're important and appreciated were exactly what I needed right now to keep pushing myself every day until I graduate. I'm very appreciative of them taking the time to come out and speak, and I hope they know it's also effective for future nurses."
Several members of the Health Carousel Quality Improvement Nursing team, corporate leadership, and representatives of the Health Carousel Foundation spent time with the Barneses examining new DAISY award programs and the growing importance of nurse recognition now when burnout and shortages are plaguing the profession globally.
On the morning of February 1, Health Carousel hosted a breakfast at its offices in the Rookwood Commons area of Cincinnati. Dozens of local nursing leaders met Mark and Bonnie, revered as celebrities within the nursing world, in person and received a complimentary, signed copy of the DAISY Foundation book "Shining the Right On All the Right." The combined attendance at the breakfast open house represented more than 400 years of nursing experience.
Later that same day, Health Carousel staff was treated to a keynote speech by the Barneses at the staffing agency's 2024 kick-off event at the Hard Rock Casino. The stories of compassionate care and the origins of the DAISY Foundation provided by Mark and Bonnie left the company's staff in tears and with a profound respect for the tireless work of nurses around the globe.
Earl Dalton, Chief Nursing Officer of Health Carousel, commented on the Barneses keynote: "What an honor to hear the DAISY Foundation remind our entire staff how the work they perform to support our nurses is vital so they, in turn, can provide the very best care to patients. Mark and Bonnie did an amazing job of highlighting the sacred act of caring for another through the hands of a nurse. As is their mission, the DAISY Foundation, through their keynote, has inspired us all to renew our commitment to Health Carousel's higher purpose of improving lives and making healthcare work better!"
