Building the Next Generation of Nurse Leaders
The Health Carousel Foundation is proud to support the next phase of Jhpiego's Nurse Leadership Development Program, expanding leadership development opportunities for nurses and nurse-midwives in Kenya and Ghana.
Implemented by Jhpiego, in collaboration with local partners and Align, the second round of the program will run from August through November 2026, reaching 50 maternal and child health nurses and nurse-midwives—25 in Kenya and 25 in Ghana. This initiative builds on the success of the inaugural cohort completed earlier in 2026 and is made possible through financial support from the Health Carousel Foundation.
Strong nurse leaders are essential to building resilient healthcare systems. Yet according to the 2025 State of the World's Nursing Report, only 25% of low- and middle-income countries reported having formal nurse leadership development programs in place. At the same time, early-career nurses often experience the highest rates of workforce attrition while having limited access to leadership development opportunities.
To help address this need, the program intentionally focuses on nurses and nurse-midwives within their first seven years of practice, equipping them with leadership skills that support professional growth and positive change within their healthcare facilities.
The program is built around the Global Nurse Leadership Toolkit, developed in 2025 with financial support from the Health Carousel Foundation, which serves as the program's core curriculum.
The first cohort demonstrated the promise of this approach. Twenty-four early-career nurses and nurse-midwives in Kenya reported a 92% improvement across the Sigma Global Nurse Leadership Competency Framework and shared inspiring stories of personal growth and clinical changes within the facilities where they work.
The Health Carousel Foundation believes investing in nurse leadership is an investment in healthier communities. By supporting programs that expand leadership opportunities for early-career nurses, the Foundation is helping empower the next generation of healthcare leaders while strengthening the nursing profession around the world.
As the second cohort begins this August, the Foundation looks forward to following the participants' journeys and celebrating the impact these emerging nurse leaders will have in Kenya, Ghana, and beyond.
