Fifty Nigerian Nurse Educator Scholarships Announced for 2024

Abuja, NGA (January 14, 2024) - The National Association of Nigerian Nurses in North America (NANNNA) declares open applications for scholarships for coursework for 2024. The scholarships will enable nurses to become nurse educators registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).

NANNNA acquired funding from the Health Carousel Foundation for the scholarships to develop nurse educators within Nigeria. This initiative, approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, aims to support and empower Colleges of Nursing Education and improve the staff strength of the institution. Only staff already in such schools should apply. Recipients of the awards must be employees of such Nursing training institutions who will receive funding to complete an accepted educational program required to register with the Council as Educators.

"Although NANNNA members live and practice nursing in the USA, we have not forgotten our Nigerian nursing roots," stated Mrs. Izoduwa Asoro, NANNNA Executive Director. ". . . We recognize their needs on healthcare issues and are grateful to have found a partner with the Health Carousel Foundation to help us to meaningfully contribute to the Council's nursing reform agenda in Nigeria."

Applicants must be graduate nurses licensed with the Council and qualify for entry into a Professional Diploma in Education (PDE), Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), or Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing Education (PGDNE) from an approved Nigerian higher education institution. Applicants must work as nurse educators for at least two years upon program completion. Applicants must not have access to other education funding sources, such as through their employer. Additionally, selection preference will be given to nurses already working in the capacity of clinical instructors or preceptors in the College of Nursing institutions who meet the position standards set forth by the Council in 2018. Selection preference will be given to applicants working in Nigerian states that are represented by the Nigerian states of origin of the NANNNA membership.

This second scholarship cohort opportunity will consist of fifty (50) Clinical Instructors and Preceptors working at all nursing schools in Nigeria. To be eligible for this scholarship, candidates must submit evidence of admission acceptance into a 12-month PDE, PGDE, or PGDNE certificate program. The Council will publish a list of acceptable schools for these admissions.

The application for this nurse educator scholarship program is available online at https://fs25.formsite.com/hcllcusa/nmcn_scholarship/index and on the NANNNA website at https://nannna.nursingnetwork.com/nannna-programs-in-nigeria/nurse-educator-scholarship.

The online application form will remain open until April 14, 2024. The NANNNA Scholarship Committee will review all applications and announce the scholarship recipients by May 2024.

About the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN)

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) is the sole governing body that regulates all cadres of nurses and midwives in Nigeria. It was established by government decree in 1979 and re-established as a parastatal by the government of Nigeria by Act Cap. No 143 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. It is the only legal, administrative, corporate, and statutory body charged with the performance of specific functions on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure the delivery of safe and effective Nursing and Midwifery care to the public through quality education and best practices. The Council has its headquarters in Abuja with 16 zonal offices across the country. To learn more about NMCN, visit https://www.nmcn.gov.ng/.

This program has received strong support and is only possible through coordinated efforts with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. "There is a need for better trained and additional numbers of nurses in Nigeria," stated Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar, Secretary-General and Registrar of NMCN. "There is also an opportunity for Nigerian nurses to rise to be the best nursing workforce worldwide. But we need to elevate the standards of teaching and the number of students graduating each year to reach this goal. We hold this opportunity in our own hands."
